Cool story Brew! @HouseOfBrew discusses his Meet Meme Event Trading Cards story! #WatchThis

I was so lucky to have my friend Jonathan Brewer and a few of my other friends on a Google+ Hangout today. I have known of Jonathan through his Meet Meme Trading Cards for around a year or so through #SHRM11 in Las Vegas.

I actually had the fabulous opportunity of meeting him IRL at this years #SHRM12 in Atlanta a few weeks back where he and I sat around a table in the Bloggers Lounge and talked shop.

His story is too cool and I wanted you all to hear it, so I asked him if he would be up for a video interview – there you have it. Take a look. You may see a few of your online friends like Dwane Lay, Paul Hebert, Tracy Tran, Robing Schooling, John Jorgensen, Joan Ginsberg and Matthew Stollak.

I love these kinds of stories about great ideas and how they come about. I also see in this story the value of connections.

Thanks Jonathan and all of you who participated.

Later!

Social Media; Policy and Privacy #WatchThis

I haven’t posted anything from #SHRM12 (ON PURPOSE) these past couple of weeks because I’ve been dreaming of SHRM and that’s just weird.

After tweeting and blogging before, during and after #SHRM12 I came back only to start hitting it hard and heavy for #ILSHRM12 that is only a month away. I’ve been lying awake at night thinking of all that still needs to be done, what could be added to make it a greater experience, and thank God – I finally finished the mobile app I’ve been working on for several months now.

With that being said, here’s a great video from leading HR experts in the “Hive” at #SHRM12 on “Social Media and Policy.” This video gives great insight  from some outstanding folks, two of which, are employment attorneys.

In this video are Heather Bussing, Elizabeth Lalli-Reese, Maren Hogen and John Sumser – some of the finest folks in the HR space. Take a look – and make sure to connect with these folks.

Here’s a FREE E-Book from SHRM that discusses Social Media Strategy for Human Resources.

And here’s a great interview with SHRM’s own Social Media Guy discussing how the HIVE came into play.

Special Thanks

Thanks to SHRM and DICE for creating such an amazing space for social learning right on site of their 2012 conference.

Can we all just get along? Generational Diversity according to Malcolm Gladwell

From selling $8.00 T-Shirts to author and keynote for #SHRM12′s annual global conference, Malcolm Gladwell began his session with the phraze, “The tipping point of society is that magic moment when social behavior tips and spreads like wildflower.”

This is something that we are terrified of happening in our cushy little world be it with our children on social media or in our workplaces – where we totally feel loss of control.

Let’s face it, we are in the middle of a cultural fundamental shift in how generations choose to not only communicate (think social web) but how they see the world.

Here are a few take-aways from Malcolm’s session on the distinctions of generational diversity and our organizations:

There are major distinctions about this generation. Let’s look at the Occupy Movement.

  • Did they have a leader? No Where they following a bunch of ideas? No. Did they have an organization? Not really, only a general assembly and if someone wanted to speak or had a contribution they pulled your name out of a hat and allowed you to speak. It was about building a network of folks who had similar beliefs and were passionate about it, but they all had a say.
  • There was no organized manner of doing things. There was no hierarchy.

We are seeing a fundamental shift in how generations view the world, their beliefs and their work places. It’s critical to the success of our organizations that we roll with this generational paradigm shift with them.

We’ve had these paradigm shifts throughout history and if we were to go back we wouldn’t even recognize the workplace.

The New Social Organization

The new generation of folks who were born in the 80’s have a profoundly different notion of how organized groups behave. These are those who grew up on video technology. These are the new millennial’s who are invading our organizations.

They are not hip to a hierarchy like we were where, where we accepted rules, went along with the flow and  if you got beat up you just.didn’t.fight.back. We were passive in our growing up with hierarchy’s where  one guy at the top made all the decisions in the organizations and you just went with it. Like it or get the hell out!

The new millennial’s don’t think this way. They don’t even think in terms of a hierarchy. They have swung full throttle and believe in an even level playing field.

  • It’s about their network. It’s not closed, it’s opened.
  • It’s not centralized, it’s decentralized.

In the end, understanding that one form is not better than the other and are instead simply two different forms with each having their own strengths and weaknesses. Not, that one is wrong and the other is right.

It’s key that millennial’s understand that they need to learn from others and their experiences. Many kids don’t understand that. And our challenge is to understand that both can coexist and work together.

The most successful companies understand these two models (think Apple). They have the best of the hierarchy and the best of a network. When you incorporate these two things you have the best of both worlds.

Twitter stalkers and other happenings! #SHRM12

The buzz is happening regarding #SHRM12 folks. And for those of you who haven’t a clue what that hashtag stands for is the Society for Human Resource Management’s annual global conference happening this weekend in Atlanta and going through next Wednesday.

HR and HR Tech bloggers are all talking it on Twitter, Facebook (perhaps LinkedIn) and over on their blogs. Many of those you can find here on HR Blogger. You’ll find some amazing blogs on all sorts of topics. Check em out!

Last year’s conference (SHRM11) set in hot Las Vegas was my first conference in the HR space. I was stoked to go as a new HR Blogger and part of the SHRM official “blog squad” and had an amazing time. Come on over to my Facebook and check out the pics on the wild-n-crazy event photos under (SHRM11).

There was one thing that I wasn’t prepared for and that was the Twitter Stalkers. Yes, you heard correctly. Somehow, after many months of busting my arse and connecting with HR peeps (Gawd, I hate the word peeps), I found that there were some folks who considered me to be influential in the HR space (how’d that happen?) and upon meeting me IRL (in real life) thought me to be some sort of celebrity and shouted, “OMG, it’s @susanavello!”

That just comes with the territory people! I am now my own celebretard!

So this year, I’m headed back to SHRM’s annual again, as a part of the blogging community (Press Team) and I’m excited about going to Atlanta, seeing all my online friends and stalking them IRL, having them buy me beers, grabbing a whole lot of FRIED FOOD while in the South, and learning boat-loads of information in this crazy HR space. I’ll be sharing as we go, so hang on for dear life!

If you’re not into this kind of stuff, I suggest you come back and visit the week following.

The rest of us are going to have a bang-up, rootin’ tootin’ time. I’m sure you’ll learn a few things if you stick around. You don’t know everything!
